Bio
Munetaka Murakami is an international power-hitting infielder for the Chicago White Sox, representing the next generation of Japanese baseball excellence. He arrives from the Tokyo Yakult Swallows of Nippon Professional Baseball (NPB), where he established himself as one of the most feared hitters in the game.
Murakami’s breakout season came in 2022, when he accomplished the rare Triple Crown at just 22 years old, leading the Central League in batting average (.318), home runs (56), and RBIs (134). His 56 home runs shattered the decades-old single-season record for a Japanese-born player in NPB and earned him the first of two consecutive Central League MVP awards (2021, 2022). On the international stage, he starred for Team Japan during the 2023 World Baseball Classic, delivering a memorable walk-off double in the semifinal to send Japan to the final.
Before becoming the cornerstone of the Swallows, Murakami was one of Japan’s most celebrated prospects. A standout at Kyushu Gakuin High School, he hit 52 home runs during his high school career, earning the nickname “The Babe Ruth of Higo.” Selected in the first round of the 2017 NPB Draft, Murakami made an immediate impact at the professional level, winning Central League Rookie of the Year honors in 2019. Over the course of his career in Japan, he was named an NPB All-Star four times.
A native of Kumamoto, Japan, Murakami’s dominant on-field presence has earned him the nickname “Murakami-sama,” meaning “God Murakami.”
