Bio
Known for his prodigious length off the tee and widely recognized as one of the most athletic players on the PGA Tour, 2019 U.S. Open Winner Gary Woodland has cemented himself among golf’s elite competitors. Woodland’s multiple PGA Tour wins demonstrate a consistent ability to compete on the biggest stage in professional golf.
Woodland had a dominant 2018-2019 season highlighted by his first major victory at the U.S. Open at Pebble Beach. With an incredible performance, he became the fourth champion in the tournament’s history to be double-digits under-par. He capped off the year with his first ever team event, being chosen by Tiger Woods as a Captain’s Pick for the 2019 Presidents Cup team.
Throughout his career, Woodland has secured 3 PGA Tour wins at the WM Phoenix Open, Valspar Championship and Reno-Tahoe Open in addition to the U.S. Open. Woodland and Matt Kuchar also teamed up in the 2011 World Cup to become the first U.S team to win the event since Tiger Woods and David Duval in 2000.
Woodland has also become known for his special relationship with Amy Bockerstette, a collegiate golfer with Down Syndrome, with whom he played the par 3 16th hole at TPC Scottsdale during a practice round at the WM Phoenix Open. Amy parred the hole with Woodland cheering her on, becoming an incredibly poignant moment for all those in attendance.
In 2023, Woodland was diagnosed with a brain lesion, necessitating brain surgery to remove it. He has since returned to fully active status on the PGA Tour, showing his strength of will and character. The following year, he was honored with the Ben Hogan Award for Courage by the Golf Writers Association of America and was inducted into the Kansas Golf Hall of Fame.
A native of Topeka, KS, Woodland graduated from Kansas University in 2007. He’s also known for being a two-sport athlete in college, starting his career as a basketball player at Washburn University before transferring to KU to pursue golf. Off the green, Woodland spends time with his wife, Gabby, and three children.
