John Harbaugh
Head Coach, New York Giants
John Harbaugh is a Super Bowl-winning coach and the newly appointed head coach of the New York Giants, respected for his innovative leadership, sharp football intellect, and proven ability to build a culture of sustained excellence.
Bio
Super Bowl-winning head coach John Harbaugh is now in his first season as head coach of the New York Giants. The 2019 NFL Coach of the Year spent 18 seasons with the Baltimore Ravens organization, where he led the franchise to 12 playoff berths and captured the franchise’s second World Championship in 2012.
During his tenure in Baltimore, Harbaugh’s impact on the franchise was evident. The Ravens posted 193 total victories (including playoffs) during his tenure, ranking among the NFL’s most successful teams, along with 180 regular season wins. Baltimore earned a playoff berth in 12 of his 18 seasons, establishing one of the league’s most consistent winning stretches.
Harbaugh’s 13 postseason victories are tied for seventh-most in NFL history and trail only Andy Reid among active head coaches. He holds the NFL record for most road playoff wins (8) and won at least one playoff game in eight of his 12 postseason appearances. Harbaugh is one of only nine coaches to earn at least 11 playoff berths in his first 16 seasons and the only coach in NFL history to win a playoff game in each of his first five seasons. He also won playoff games in six of his first seven seasons, a unique NFL record.
The 2012 Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII, 34-31, over the San Francisco 49ers in one of the most dramatic games in NFL history. Baltimore overcame a furious second-half comeback and a 34-minute power outage at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans to capture the franchise’s second World Championship.
Under Harbaugh, Baltimore appeared in four AFC Championship games (2008, 2011, 2012 & 2023) and won at least one playoff game in eight of his 12 postseasons. He and his younger brother, Jim (former 49ers and current Chargers head coach), are the only siblings to reach three conference championship games in the first five seasons of a head coaching career.
Harbaugh compiled a 102-45 home record at M&T Bank Stadium over 18 seasons, one of the strongest home-field marks in the NFL. He led the Ravens to five AFC North titles (2011-12, 2018-19 & 2023), including a franchise-best 14-2 record in 2019, which earned Baltimore the No. 1 seed in the AFC playoffs for the first time in team history.
Maintaining a strong defensive tradition, Harbaugh’s Ravens allowed the NFL’s fewest overall touchdowns (527), fewest points per game (19.0), and second-fewest net yards per game (318.2) from 2008-23. The 2023 team allowed just 16.5 points per game, the lowest mark in the NFL. His red zone defense ranked in the Top 5 nine times, including first overall in 2011.
On offense, Baltimore produced record-setting seasons, highlighted by 2019 when the Ravens finished No. 1 in points (33.2 ppg) and rushing yards (206.0 ypg) while setting an NFL single-season rushing record with 3,296 yards. Under Harbaugh, quarterback Lamar Jackson won unanimous NFL MVP honors in 2019, throwing for a franchise-record 36 touchdowns while rushing for 1,206 yards.
Harbaugh’s teams have also excelled in special teams, producing 17 Pro Bowl selections and consistently ranking among the NFL’s elite units.
Prior to Baltimore, Harbaugh coached special teams for the Philadelphia Eagles (1998-2005), where he helped the team rank in the Top 10 five times and mentored players such as kicker David Akers and punter Dirk Johnson. He also spent 11 years coaching at the collegiate level, including stops at the University of Cincinnati, Indiana, Morehead State, and the University of Pittsburgh.
