Bio
Mack Brown, a 47-year veteran of collegiate coaching and 36-year head coach at Texas (1998-2013), North Carolina (1988-97; 2019-24), Tulane (1985-87) and Appalachian State (1983), ranks seventh all-time in FBS victories with 288. A two-time National Coach of the Year (2005 Paul W. “Bear” Bryant, 2008 Bobby Dodd), he’s one of the few to lead two programs to Top-Five national finishes and the only coach to win 100 games at two FBS schools.
In his second stint at UNC, Brown guided the Tar Heels to six straight bowl appearances and multiple Top-25 recruiting classes. His teams developed standout players like Omarion Hampton, Cedric Gray, Bryson Nesbit, Drake Maye, and Josh Downs, while producing 15 NFL Draft picks in four years. His program earned national recognition for academic excellence, leading the ACC in APR and capturing the AFCA Academic Achievement Award.
During his first UNC tenure (1988–97), Brown rebuilt the program into a national contender with three 10-win seasons, six straight bowls, a Top-5 finish, and 38 NFL Draft picks. His 1996–97 teams went 20-3, ranked in the Top 10, and featured players like Dré Bly, Greg Ellis, and Brian Simmons.
At Texas, Brown went 158-48 (.767), winning the 2005 BCS National Championship and two Big 12 titles. The Longhorns earned nine 10-win seasons in 16 years—including a streak of nine straight—and finished in the Top 15 for 10 consecutive years. His teams produced a Heisman winner, 54 All-Americans, and 71 NFL Draft picks, while excelling academically with 159 Academic All-Big 12 selections and two Campbell Trophy winners.
Inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame in 2018, Brown is also a member of the Texas Sports Hall of Fame, Rose Bowl Hall of Fame, and Holiday Bowl Hall of Fame. Across his career, he’s coached 144 NFL Draft picks, including 20 first-rounders, and emphasized academic and community success with 80% graduation rates at UNC and record-setting APR marks in his final years in Chapel Hill.
