Bio
Cal Raleigh is a switch-hitting catcher for the Seattle Mariners, known as one of the most complete players in Major League Baseball. A standout defensive player, Raleigh earned the American League Platinum Glove Award—becoming the first Mariner to receive the honor and the first catcher in franchise history to win a Gold Glove Award. In 2024, he led all MLB catchers in games caught (135) and innings caught (1,122), while also leading in catcher “caught stealings” for the second consecutive season with 26. Raleigh led all MLB catchers in home runs (34) for the third straight season, and his 91 home runs through his first four MLB seasons are the second-most in Mariners history. The BBWAA’s Seattle Chapter recognized Raleigh’s historic 2024 performance by naming him the Mariners’ Most Valuable Player.
Nicknamed “Big Dumper,” Raleigh is already a fan favorite in Seattle despite his young career. His dedication to the game and his team was further celebrated when he was named the Mariners’ 2024 Heart & Hustle Award nominee.
Drafted 90th overall by the Mariners in the 2018 MLB Draft, Raleigh climbed quickly through the minor leagues. With the Everett AquaSox, he batted .288 with eight home runs and 29 RBIs, later earning California League All-Star honors with the Modesto Nuts. He advanced with the Arkansas Travelers and Tacoma Rainiers before making his MLB debut with the Mariners in 2021. Before turning pro, Raleigh made his mark at Florida State University, where he earned Freshman All-American honors. In 2017, he drove in the winning run in the ACC Championship Game and later hit a clutch home run in the bottom of the ninth inning in a College World Series game. In high school, Raleigh earned All-American honors and was named Conference Player of the Year in both baseball and basketball.
Beyond his on-field accomplishments, Raleigh has made a meaningful impact off the field. He remains deeply connected to his hometown of Cullowhee, North Carolina, having led efforts to donate funds and supplies to victims of Hurricane Helene in the area. He has spearheaded initiatives to support the North Carolina Community Foundation and inspired his teammates to contribute to the cause as well. Raleigh’s exceptional career reflects his passion, talent, and leadership—both on and off the field.
